A Close Finish at Noosa, by Midget Farrelly, Sydney Morning-Herald, Sept 21, 1969

Ted Spencer won the professional contest at Noosa last weekend after his recent win at Newcastle. Ted fought it out in a very close finish with David Treloar, who many thought was going to win.

Peter Drouyn was third and signified his displeasure by giving away his trophy, jumping into his car, and driving off.

Butch Cooney won the junior title. Butch has been living at Noosa for the last couple of months, building surfboards and testing them for a Sydney manufacturer.

There were two twists to the contest—one was the fact that none of Noosa’s bays were breaking and the event was concluded in six toot surf at Sunshine Beach, just south of Noosa.

The other twist was that prize money, totaling 1,000, was never presented because of poor entry. Next year organizers hope to straighten out the event and run it with a more professional air.

Socially, the contest was a success, with barbeques and whatnot being held.
