Lightly populated tropical island chain, governed by India and located in the Bay of Bengal, about 200 miles off the coast of Myanmar; described by Sinbad in the Arabian Nights as a "string of pearls." 

While small groups of Australian surfers began visiting the Andamans in the early 1980s, the islands weren't revealed to the surf public at large until 1998, when photographer John Callahan, working for 

 magazine, visited with a traveling crew that included pro surfer Chris Malloy, musician Jack Johnson, and writer Sam George. 

The group landed in the capital city of Port Blair, with permits to sail the coasts of nearby islands. Access to the 204-island Andaman chain is tightly restricted, as the hilly and densely forested region is home to a number of antediluvian native tribes having little or no contact with the outside world. The 

 group, over the course of two weeks, found some high-quality reef waves, but chose not to publish the spots' exact locations. 

A right-breaking wave called Kumari Point proved to be the great discovery. "Faster than G-land, faster than J-Bay," as the 

 later reported, citing two of the most famous high-velocity waves. "Quite possibly the best coral-reef point on the planet." But a follow-up trip in 1999 produced no surf whatsoever. 

April and May are thought to be the two best months for surfing in the Andamans, as Indian Ocean swells are strong enough by that time to reach into the Bay of Bengal, while the seasonal southwest monsoons haven't yet started in earnest. 

In 1998, a Thailand-based charter company has run 10- to 14-day surf tours into the Andamans; numerous high-end sailing yachts charter surfers throughout the Andamans as of 2012. 

In December 2004, a magnitude 9.2 earthquake originating off the coast of nearby Sumatra sent a powerful series of tsunamis surging toward the Andamans, and thrust huge chunks of coral reefs several feet above sea level. Most of the damage was restricted to the Andamans' lightly populated northern islands.
