Dry and rocky Muslim country in South Asia, bordered by Iran, Afghanistan, China, and India, and featuring more than 600 miles of desolate south- and southwest-facing Arabian Sea coastline. 

"The Pakistani embassy near enough laughed in our faces when we said we wanted to go surfing in the Makran desert," English surfer Stuart Butler reported to surfing Web site Swell.com in 2001, just after he and fellow Brits Dan Haylock and Ben Clift, along with French surf photographer Antony Colas, became the first wave-riders in Pakistan. (Sailboarding had come to Pakistan years earlier, and in 1998 the Windsurfing Association of Pakistan was formed in the eastern port city of Karachi.) 

It was hoped that the Pakistani surf during the June–August monsoon season might be good enough to outweigh the hassles and dangers of exploring a roadless, lawless, sandstorm- and bandit-filled coastline. The surfers crossed 150 miles of shoreline in three weeks, traveling by Jeep, boat, and camel; midday temperatures regularly hit 100, and the ocean was 80 degrees and dirt brown. The group nonetheless surfed nearly every day, mainly in windblown six-foot beachbreak waves or refined but minuscule pointbreak rights.

The Pakistani government insisted that the visitors employ armed guards, and at one point the group came across a heavily armed convoy waiting to transfer hashish, heroin, and firearms to ships waiting offshore. The surfers also encountered a 17-year-old fisherman living in a tiny coastal village near Karachi who was using a wooden plank to ride the nearby shorebreak waves.
