Enterprising surfer-writer-editor-marketer from Ventura, California; the only person to hold the editor's post at both 

 magazines. Slater was born (1971) and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, moved with his family to Ventura at age seven, and began surfing at nine. At 15 he was the Western Surfing Association boys' division champion; he later became a three-time member of the National Scholastic Surfing Association's National Team.

After receiving a B.A. in sociology from UC San Diego in 1994, Slater moved to San Francisco, where he became a regular at Maverick's and earned a reputation as one of California's best big-wave riders. Slater was hired as 

's associate editor in 1997; the following year he became managing editor; in 1999 he was promoted to editor, a title he held for just 12 issues before jumping over to start-up surfing website Swell.com to serve for 15 months as its managing editor. As a surf journalist, Slater focused on competition and big-wave riding; the two converged in 1998 when he covered the first Reef Brazil Big-Wave Team World Championships, held in 30-foot surf at Todos Santos Island, Baja California. Slater himself competed regularly in the annual contest at Maverick's, beginning with the 1999 Quiksilver Men Who Ride Mountains event; Slater finished second in the 2004 contest.
