Mildly derogatory phrase, popular in the 1960s, for a young and usually voluptuous bikini-clad beauty; sometimes defined as a surfer, but more often synonymous with the resolutely nonsurfing "beach bunny." Also known as "bikini chick" or "bikini girl," and similar to the "snow bunny."

In Southern California and parts of Australia, bathing beauties were photographed as far back as the 1930s using surfboards as props. In the '60s, 

, and the rest of the Hollywood beach films of the period were loaded with surf bunnies, often dancing the Twist, the Watusi, and the Hitchhiker.

The surf bunny went professional in the early 1980s, starting as an add-on attraction for the 1981 Op Pro surf contest, where bikini-clad girls cat-walked, turned and posed before spectators and a panel of judges for prizes and cash.

Starting in the late '00s, it often became difficult to make distinctions between surf bunnies and actual surfers, as some of the women world tour pros—including Alana Blanchard and Laura Enever—went all-in for sex appeal as well as wave-riding skills; despite getting nowhere near the top of the WCT rankings, Blanchard was a two-time SURFER Poll Awards winner. 

The single "Surf Bunny Beach," by the Surf Bunnies, was released in 1963, on Dot Records. "Surf Bunny," an instrumental single by Gene Gray and the Stingrays, came out the same year, also on Dot.
