 If you're an old ASP fan, you'll remember Flea as the intense, arm-waving, extravagantly mustachioed coach and husband of four-time world champ 

 old, you might recall Flea from a star-making cameo in Greg MacGillivray's 1965 movie 

. Ten-year-old kid gets his own segment! What an honor! Or wait, was it? Listen to MacGillivray's narration as the chubby little master trims and cross-steps his way across some fine beachbreak lefts at Ormond Beach, Florida, his home break. "For Hawaiian or West Coast standards," MacGillivray begins, sounding very Bruce-Brown-meets-Jack-Webb, "Flea wouldn't be too outstanding. But with the standards on the East Coast, where you're considered really good if you can stand up and turn. Flea is an outstanding surfer. He can turn, walk the nose . . . and fall off." This last bit delivered as Shaw splashes down at the tail end of a well-executed ride. Smirk and jab, Greg, smirk and jab. Have a laugh at the kid while you insult the whole region.

Then again, we were all like that. West Coast surfers treated East Coasters like eager vassals right up until Slater won his first world title. I will forever sing the praises of postwar Southern California's surf-related ingenuity and style. But at some point—let's say, I don't know, 1966, around there—we OD'd on our own Kool-Aid, and it took decades to recover. Did we recover?

Anyway, back to Flea. Better yet, Flea's dad, Brewster Shaw. First person you see in the clip, above, standing huge and quiet and proud and tanned in his front yard, with sunglasses and lit cigarette. Brewster was one of Florida's pioneering surfers, and he put young Flea on a board for the first time. He was also a local car racing legend. Jump to 8:43 on the clip below. That's Brewster roaring off to first place in the Acceleration division of the '57 NASCAR Daytona Beach event. Young Flea is in that crowd somewhere, cheering his four-year-old lungs out for Dad. If you've got 25 minutes to kill, watch the whole clip, it will not disappoint. If not, go straight to 6:06 and hold your breath.
